READ MORE ABOUT 'SKETCHES OF YOU'

‘sketches of you’
by john ambrosini
pianist& composer john ambrosini’s new work entitled ‘sketches of you’ is written in seven thematically unique yet interrelated sections. it is arranged for jazz quintet (trumpet, alto sax, piano, bass, and drums) and takes the listener on a musical journey that represents the struggle through seven universal phases of any one person’s spiritual life (birth – youth – struggle – search – growth –acceptance – arrival). patterns of seven appear throughout the piece and this compositional choice was influenced by the many spiritual, religious, and mythological references where ‘seven’ signifies growth and change. the buddha is said to have taken seven steps just moments after being born – each step sprouting a lotus plant – the flower of which signifies the struggle of spiritual growth. judaism, christianity, islam, all seem to share this notion that spiritual struggle is a key component in achieving enlightenment and the number seven appears often. there are seven days in each moon phase as well – the moon in a state of constant change.
as a composition, ‘sketches of you’ combines post ‘bebop’ melodic figures, impressionistic clusters of chordal tones, post minimalist arranging, ensemble improvisation, and classical stylings. this work expands upon mr. ambrosini’s last cd ‘nine stories’ (2011 – featuring dave binney (alto sax), drew gress (acoustic bass), and mike moreno (guitar)) and combines strong compositional skills and world class nyc-based improvisers. ‘nine stories’ is notable for its memorable melodies set to evocative lush jazz harmonies.

sketches of you
by john ambrosini

part i – ‘prelude in Bb’
the main motif is introduced on trumpet accompanied by tight, lush harmonies; alto sax joins and the quintet evokes a serene orchestral ambience

part ii – ‘inventions’
a bebop influenced atonal theme is announced by the alto sax supported by a driving multitonal swing vamp

part iii – ‘hejira’
a cascade of melodic figures are traded off by trumpet, sax, and piano underpinned by a bass passage that changes tonal center alternating between major and minor chords.

part iv – ‘the lover and the beloved’
a 22 beat figure provides a vehicle for the drums to improvise; a plaintive and haunting melody played by both trumpet and bass follows; the 22/8 figure returns

part v – ‘promised’
the piano begins with a repetitive rhythmic motif reminiscent of steve reich, the bass and drums create a driving ostinato, and the horns play a bebop influenced fanfare

part vi -‘impractical dream’
trumpet and alto sax play a simple melodic theme over harmonic chords that create unusual tensions through polytonality and a polyrhythmic boss nova

part vii – ‘in no strange land’
the motif used in part i is restated by the trumpet; sax, and piano add thematic material that reflects musical moments found in all seven sections.

THE REVIEWS

Until recently, Ambrosini has remained a bit under the radar. With performances like the one at Michiko Studios, this is no doubt coming to an end. The democracy of sound created by this ensemble on this night also elevated each of the players individually—perhaps none more than the leader himself.

MICHAEL BLOCKLong Island Pulse, Block and Blue Reviews

Watching the John Ambrosini Trio at a recent performance at the Faust Harrison Recital Hall in Huntington, it was easy to feel as if I was transported to the island of Manhattan – to the great clubs: Birdland, Iridium, Smalls, the Jazz Standard – with their cramped tables connected by narrow alleys, and some of the best jazz on the planet. The trio, which consisted of Ambrosini on piano, Jim Cammack on bass and Frank Bellucci on drums, brought a strong improvisational bop feel to the standard’s catalogue. The players – who have only been playing together as a trio for a short while - displayed the well-honed telepathy of a long- established group.
