‘sketches of you’
by john ambrosini
pianist & composer john ambrosini’s new work entitled ‘sketches of you’ is written in seven thematically unique yet interrelated sections. it is arranged for jazz quintet (trumpet, alto sax, piano, bass, and drums) and takes the listener on a musical journey that represents the struggle through seven universal phases of any one person’s spiritual life (birth – youth – struggle – search – growth –acceptance – arrival). patterns of seven appear throughout the piece and this compositional choice was influenced by the many spiritual, religious, and mythological references where ‘seven’ signifies growth and change. the buddha is said to have taken seven steps just moments after being born – each step sprouting a lotus plant – the flower of which signifies the struggle of spiritual growth. judaism, christianity, islam, all seem to share this notion that spiritual struggle is a key component in achieving enlightenment and the number seven appears often. there are seven days in each moon phase as well – the moon in a state of constant change.
